Kenneth,

In using Viena to make up soundfonts for virtual organs (for jOrgan), all my Instruments have identical split and panning allocations. In the past I have used an existing Instrument as a template, and simply reassigned new samples to make up a new Instrument. I seem to be having a problem with my latest project. Could this happen because the new samples are ten times the length of the ones I want them to replace?

Are there in fact traps with my approach?

John Reimer

reloading sample resets rootkey and pitchshifting

Hi all,

I use Viena 0.930E. When i have a new sample to replace an existing one with the same name, I can load the sample. Viena then asks to replace the old one, after that I click yes. Then the root key is set to 60 and pitch shifting is done on that sample (allso in a drumkit). Is it possible to let all parameters stay the same after reloading a sample (with the same name) ?

I've read in an other topic :
"Additionally, you will not have the problem with pitch shifting as the Scale Tuning generator is set to 0 (no pitch shifting based on key/root relation)."
That doesn't work for me

Thanks,
Jan

Three Files/Folders Pane Problems

(I see that you have more serious problems to deal with, so please take your time responding...)

1) In SynthFont 2, the program always opens to a blank "File/Folders" pane--why is that? If I switch to Plug & Play and immediately back to Files/Folders, the pane then "populates".

2) In all versions of the program, when in Files/Folders, if you choose "files in Folder list" and "selected files", after playing is completed, you cannot select and play different files--the new selection is ignored and the originally selected files replay. This does not occur if you choose "selected to last".

3) If you start in "Files and folders" by selecting files, when you try to play them, the program always points out that you haven't actually loaded a file yet and do you want to? What's this all about? Why doesn't it just load the first of the selected files, and start playing? It's taken me a while to figure out that double clicking on ANY file in the list before actually selecting what I want eliminates the annoyance, but why is this necessary?

VSTSynthFont pitch modulation

Kenneth,

I have just had reason to check the pitch modulation of VSTSynthFont.
I made a test soundfont of 440 Hz sine, using Viena, and set, in turn, the Mod LFO and Vib LFO parameters at 5 Hz frequency and 20 cents pitch.

I got the following results, using the Graphical display of AP Tuner, which shows pitch over time:

Viena itself plus or minus 14 cents (i.e. total sweep of 28 cents)
VSTSynthFont plus or minus 2.5 cents ( total etc. of 5)

Fluidsynth plus or minus 10 cents approx (total etc. of 20)
SFZ+ plus or minus 10 cents approx (total etc. of 20)

It may be a slightly old version of VSTSynthFont I am using, and I will send you the version in a later post if it matters. The Viena version is also a little old, I think.

Do these results surprise you?

John Reimer

is it possible to "protect" sf2 files?

I have purchased a 3rd party sf2 sound library, and I have a couple of sf2 VST plugins that allow me to open and test sf2 sounds...These plugins open and play every sf2 I have on my system, but NONE of these new sf2's will load in at all.

They do run in the program they were designed for however...thus leading me to think they are protected in some way.
I cannot find any overt protection, and there are no other warnings apart from the Cannot Load file message.

To all intents they SEEM like normal soundfont files....

And in Viena when I select import Soundfonts and go to the directory they have been extracted to, they do not even LIST let alone load!!!?????

As I have said before I am new to the sf2 format, so I do not know if this sort of protection is possible, hence the question...

Thanks

auto-name great feature - additional request

As far as I see the preset auto-name feature renames the presets instrument names from <old name> to Bank:Prog numbers. That's already great and a big help for example to load SF2 fonts the right way into NI Kontakt sampler.

It would be exiting to have in addition to this default behaviour the possiblity to add the old prog (patch) name as well, so that
GrandPiano becomes '000-000 GrandPiano' instead of only 000:000

Might be an idea to have the auto-name function being configurable within the Viena.ini?

... and thanks again for this really helpful program!

Best wishes, tomotello (Thomas)

Drumkits auto mapping etc

Hi

I try to make many soundfonts out of the multiples samples I have.
For instance, I have about 400 bassdrums, and I want to make ONE soundfont for all of those.
I'd like Viena to automatically create the required instruments/presets for each group of 128 sample, with automatic mapping to every keyboard note.
So I would drop the 400 samples in Viena, I would tell it to "auto create drumkit", it would fill 1st instrument with samples 1 to 128, then automatically create instrument 2 and fill it with samples 129 to 256 etc.

Is that already possible ?

Also, when merging existing soundfonts, is it possible to change the lo or hi bank settings for the whole instrument at once ? (as, when im merging things with awave (seems we cannot do that with Viena), it produces a lot of instruments with the same bank/program number).

Thank you

Multiple select

Perhaps I haven't read enough but I don't seem to be able to multiple select e.g. presets.

With one highlighted, the normal (Windows) approach of CTL-LeftClick or Shift-LeftClick doesn't appear to work (the one clicked becomes the only one highlighted).

Then, using Shift-CTL-X gives a warning about a later purge with a "Yes to All" button available implying that there could have been multiple items selected. So, how do I multiple select?

Also, as I am having to single select, I am doing continuous Shift-CTL-X Enter but this fails after a varying number of items (the purge warning box doesn't appear and Viena appears to hang) and I (appear to) have to purge (or perhaps perform some other action) before I can resume using Shift-CTL-X. I thought that perhaps I wasn't into the swing of it and hit a key combination that caused it to fail somehow or enter some other mode that I wasn't aware of but how ever careful I am it appears to fail after (a random) number of Shift-CTL-X's
